A STUDY ON THE DEVELOPMENT FOR THE TOOL - ACHIEVEMENT TEST
INTRODUCTION
As part of our B.Ed. curriculum, I have conducted a group practicum. My topic is about Achievement test. For this I have prepared a tool to implement achievement test.
The purpose of the study is how to prepare a tool for achievement test. The tool prepared for my study constitutes several questions regarding different areas of achievements among the high school students.
The report of this practicum begins with the need and significance of the study. Then the objectives are discussed. Literature review collected from secondary sources is followed. Then the tool prepared for this study is presented before the conclusion. This practicum helps to develop and improve my assessment skills as a teacher trainer.Next I move on to the need and significance of the study.
NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
An achievement test has a great significance in all types of instructional progress of an individual. A teacher depends upon the achievement tests for measuring the progress of her students in his/her subject area. So the teachers should be well-versed with the meaning and characteristics of achievement test (Aggarwal, 2006).Next, I move on to the objectives of the study.
OBJECTIVES
Achievement tests are prepared to evaluate the extent to which the aims and objectives of education have been achieved. This is used for evaluating and improving the curriculum meant for the students of different grades. Achievement tests are designed to identify the students of different categories such as slow learners, gifted and average students etc as a result of which the teachers would be able to provide remedial instructions and enrichment programme for the students. Achievement tests are useful in helping students to choose suitable subjects or courses according to their achievement levels. It is helpful for the teachers to enable them to know strength and weaknesses of students in different subjects and skill as a result of which the teacher can be able to prepare their students for different competitions so far competitions of different subjects or courses are concerned.Next, I move on to the literature review.
LITERATURE REVIEW
An achievement test is designed to measure a person’s level of skill, accomplishment or knowledge in a specific area.
Use of Achievement Tests: Schools utilize achievement tests to measure the progress and academic aptitude of their students, ,while city and state education departments use the results to inform their understanding of how well students are being taught, and whether their performances are up to state and city standards for students at their grade level(Aggarwal,2001).
Steps Involved: The steps included in the achievement tests are planning of test, preparation of a design for test, preparation of blueprint, writing of items, and the last step is preparation of scoring keys and marking scheme.
An achievement test is a test to assess the developed skill or knowledge of students. These tests are often contrasted with tests that measure aptitude, i.e. a more general and stable cognitive trait. The test scores are often used in an educational system to determine the level of instruction for which a student is prepared. The type of ability test that describes what a person has learned to do is called an achievement test (Thorndike, 1969).
An achievement test is an instrument or tool to evaluate relative achievement of the learners. It occupies an indispensible space in teaching learning process(Aggarwal,2001).Next I move on to the planning.
Planning: I have selected high school students for the achievement test. I selected 10 questions for conducting this achievement test and maximum time allotted for this test is 20 minutes.Next I move on to the preparation of design for the test.
Design: For this study I have prepared a design for the test on the basis of yes or No questions for assessing students achievement.Next I move on to the preparation of blue print.

ii. The number indicates the marks.
Next I move on to the important section of the work i.e. the tool.
TOOL
- Did you receive any reward while participation in sports competition?
- Have you take any precautions while achieving a task?
- Have you received any academic scholarships?
- Have you ever participated in district or state level art competition?
- Do you like to participate in quizzes for acquiring more knowledge?
- Do you feel disappointed when your achievements are nor considered by your teachers?
- Have you ever accomplished something difficult?
- Does your achievement enrich your confidence level?
- Does your academic performance enhance your skills and abilities?
- Have you ever accomplished something difficult?
Next I move on to the preparation of scoring key.
Scoring Key: To conduct this study, we prepared 10 yes or No type questions, each positive answer for a question carriers two marks.
CONCLUSION
As part of B. Ed. curriculum I conducted a practicum work based on the topic Achievement test. For this study I went through several steps such as identifying the need and significance of the study, preparation of objectives, literature review collected from secondary sources, planning, preparation of design for the test, preparation of scoring key, preparation of blue print and the preparation of tool. The tool consists of ten questions regarding achievement test. It is useful in the self-assessment of student achievements.
From this practicum work, I have learned how to conduct a study based on achievement test among high school students, how to prepare a tool for the study and how to coordinate a group work.
