Technology Practicum 2

A STUDY ON THE DEVELOPMENT FOR THE TOOL - ACHIEVEMENT TEST

INTRODUCTION

As part of our B.Ed. curriculum, I have conducted a group practicum. My topic is about Achievement test. For this I have prepared a tool to implement achievement test.
The purpose of the study is how to prepare a tool for achievement test. The tool prepared for my study constitutes several questions regarding different areas of achievements among the high school students.
The report of this practicum begins with the need and significance of the study. Then the objectives are discussed. Literature review collected from secondary sources is followed. Then the tool prepared for this study is presented before the conclusion. This practicum helps to develop and improve my assessment skills as a teacher trainer.Next I move on to the need and significance of the study.

NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

An achievement test has a great significance in all types of instructional progress of an individual. A teacher depends upon the achievement tests for measuring the progress of her students in his/her subject area. So the teachers should be well-versed with the meaning and characteristics of achievement test (Aggarwal, 2006).Next, I move on to the objectives of the study.

OBJECTIVES

Achievement tests are prepared to evaluate the extent to which the aims and objectives of education have been achieved. This is used for evaluating and improving the curriculum meant for the students of different grades. Achievement tests are designed to identify the students of different categories such as slow learners, gifted and average students etc as a result of which the teachers would be able to provide remedial instructions and enrichment programme for the students. Achievement tests are useful in helping students to choose suitable subjects or courses according to their achievement levels. It is helpful for the teachers to enable them to know strength and weaknesses of students in different subjects and skill as a result of which the teacher can be able to prepare their students for different competitions so far competitions of different subjects or courses are concerned.Next, I move on to the literature review.

LITERATURE REVIEW

An achievement test is designed to measure a person’s level of skill, accomplishment or knowledge in a specific area.

Use of Achievement Tests: Schools utilize achievement tests to measure the progress and academic aptitude of their students, ,while city  and state education departments use the results to inform their understanding of how well students are being taught, and whether their performances are up to state and city standards for students at their grade level(Aggarwal,2001).
Steps Involved: The steps included in the achievement tests are planning of test, preparation of a design for test, preparation of blueprint, writing of items, and the last step is preparation of scoring keys and marking scheme.

An achievement test is a test to assess the developed skill or knowledge of students. These tests are often contrasted with tests that measure aptitude, i.e. a more general and stable cognitive trait. The test scores are often used in an educational system to determine the level of instruction for which a student is prepared. The type of ability test that describes what a person has learned to do is called an achievement test (Thorndike, 1969).

An achievement test is an instrument or tool to evaluate relative achievement of the learners. It occupies an indispensible space in teaching learning process(Aggarwal,2001).Next I move on to the planning.

Planning: I have selected high school students for the achievement test. I selected 10 questions for conducting this achievement test and maximum time allotted for this test is 20 minutes.Next I move on to the preparation of design for the test.

Design: For this study I have prepared a design for the test on the basis of yes or No questions for assessing students achievement.Next I move on to the preparation of blue print.

Next I move on to the important section of the work i.e. the tool.

TOOL
  1. Did you receive any reward while participation in sports competition?
  2. Have you take any precautions while achieving a task?
  3. Have you received any academic scholarships?
  4. Have you ever participated in district or state level art competition?
  5. Do you like to participate in quizzes for acquiring more knowledge?
  6. Do you feel disappointed when your achievements are nor considered by your teachers?
  7. Have you ever accomplished something difficult?
  8. Does your achievement enrich your confidence level?
  9. Does your academic performance enhance your skills and abilities?
  10. Have you ever accomplished something difficult?
Next I move on to the preparation of scoring key.

Scoring Key: To conduct this study, we prepared 10 yes or No type questions, each positive answer for a question carriers two marks.

CONCLUSION

As part of B. Ed. curriculum I conducted a practicum work based on the topic Achievement test. For this study I went through several steps such as identifying the need and significance of the study, preparation of objectives, literature review collected from secondary sources, planning, preparation of design for the test, preparation of scoring key, preparation of blue print and the preparation of tool. The tool consists of ten questions regarding achievement test. It is useful in the self-assessment of student achievements.

From this practicum work, I have learned how to conduct a study based on achievement test among high school students, how to prepare a tool for the study and how to coordinate a group work.

SELF EVALUATION AND PEER EVALUATION

Difference between Self evaluation and Peer evaluation

    Self Evaluation
● Self evaluation helps students to recognise their own strengths and weaknesses.
● It is the process of systematically observe, analyse and value one's own action.
● To highlight strengths, correct performance, weaknesses, and develop unused skills and abilities.
● To recognize areas that need improvement or development.
● It helps students stay involved and motivated and encourages self reflection and responsibility for their learning.

Peer Evaluation
● Peer evaluation is a process of collegial feedback on quality of teaching, because it is a purposeful process of gathering information and evidence about the effectiveness of teaching processes.

Role of Self evaluation in education.

● It provides teachers with a means of systematically looking at how they teach and how pupils learn.
● Provides the teachers an opportunity to honestly and objectively consider and document their performance in and outside the classroom.
● It identify the professional development needed to further enhance capacity to teach well.
● It improve the educational experiences provided for students.
● It help teachers to improve outcomes for learners.

Advantages and disadvantages of Peer evaluation

Advantages

● It provides a complete picture of employee interactions and also reveals the employee’s strengths and weaknesses.
● It provides a broader range of information about the employee.
● The feedback provided by the peers are easier to relate with, because it helps the employees to understand their shortcomings and enhance their performance.

Disadvantages

● Opinions provided in the reviews may be polarised. Especially in case of departmental loyalty or friendship, it becomes very difficult to judge an employee from the review provided by their colleagues.
● It may lead to overburden of work for the employees and may affect their regular tasks.
● Employees from small communities at work  place especially those from the same team. Asking them to evaluate each other may be uncomfortable.

INTRODUCTION
Practicum is a specialized field of study that is designed to give students supervised practical application of a previously or concurrently studied theory.
There are nine steps include in this practicum. The practicum is on the topic of 'Role and Attitude about the passion of drawing among the B. Ed. teacher-trainees in Christ Nagar College of Education, Thiruvallom.
To conduct this practicum, I consider the hypothesis of the study. I prepare 3 research questions based on my topic and 10 survey questions. Providing this survey questions to 10 teacher -trainees and collect data from their responses. At last prepare a pie chart on each questions and evaluate it.
TOPIC
My topic is Role and Attitude about the passion of drawing among the B. Ed. teacher - trainees in Christ Nagar College of Education, Thiruvallom. I chose this topic, because I'm passionate drawing and also it enriches the creative skills among the teacher - trainees. Next I considering hypothesis of the study.

CONCLUSION

The practicum shed light on the role and attitude among the B. Ed. teacher-trainees about the passion of drawing. To conduct this practicum, first I identify my hobby -Drawing. I set a topic based on my identification. Then I consider my hypothesis on the study. I prepare 3 research questions based on drawing. Then I sets 10 survey questions and provide it into 10 teacher-trainees. Through the survey question, I move on the next step - collection of data. Using this collection of data I create pie chart on each questions based on the responses of teacher - trainees. As a student - teacher and future teacher, this practicum helps me to how to prepare research questions and survey questions about a topic, how to collect data from the survey questions and how to evaluate it. Through this practicum I can find out the creativity of the teacher- trainees and also develop my questioning skills.
